Mural Painting

| A striking Kerala mural portraying the battle finale between Rama and Ravana. Quite interestingly, Rama is shown mounted on Hanuman. Ravana's asura lineage is brought out by his darker skin and protruding fangs. The large scale gives it a dramatic effect, with the plain edge boundaries looking like naturally worn-out plaster. Most of the colours used for this important painting are natural vegetable extracts, giving a soft, muted colour tone, unlike synthetic dyes. This vibrant painting works beautifully as a statement artwork in a contemporary space. Unlike most mural paintings, which are painted on canvas, this example is painted on a solid block of wood, which is burnished to give the effect of a natural wall painting. |
